The Terrene Chronicles are a series of short stories that explore the history of the world created by R.T. Kaelin in his critically acclaimed novel, Progeny, the first volume in The Children of the White Lion series. Key moments in the past are explored in depth in each short story, giving fans of Progeny a peek into what shaped the people, countries, and history of Terrene.
Rivals is the third trio of stories from The Terrene Chronicles (No. 7, 8, and 9) and take a closer look at two of the mysterious races of the wild nation of Sudash orcs and razorfiends. In the first story, Ascension, follow Ena, a young Nascepel (razorfiend) as she seeks to claim her position in her family. In the second story, Opportunity, Follow Rorrargh – an orcish character from Progeny – as he struggles to emerge from the shadow of his more capable siblings before being ensnared by a cunning member of a rival clan. In the last tale, Conflict, watch the collision course the two are on and enjoy the machinations, plotting, and eventual betrayal by both.
These stories give a reader a behind-the-curtains look at some of the driving forces in Progeny and The Children of the White Lions series.
Reviews for R.T. Kaelin's other works
"Anyone who enjoys adventure stories or magical and paranormal I would suggest you give [Progeny] a try. For me, Progeny is in league with both The Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings and far better than Harry Potter - Progeny has a wealth of depth to it that I haven't seen in many books.
From the first chapter I was completely hooked. Progeny has many layers of stories within its pages, and I found it totally awe inspiring as a read, with each character that is developed really coming to life and adding weight to the story telling."

"Progeny is the debut novel of R.T. Kaelin and I have to say I was really impressed. Overall, I would favorably compare his writing with Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, (early) Robert Jordan and even a bit of David Eddings flavor mixed in. I really enjoyed this book and my biggest disappointment is going to be waiting for the next installment."
- LuxuryReading.com
"Cleverly conceived and expertly crafted, Kaelin demonstrates great talent as a writer with this work. The grand scale world-building, rarely seen in a debut novel, is on par with current greats of the genre such as Brandon Sanderson (Warbreaker) and Jim Butcher (Furies of Calderon). Though it nears seven hundred pages long, the epilogue comes far too soon; but the story holds great promise for future adventures in the series."
- Her Book Self Book Reviews
“I found the book to immediately capture my attention since as you know I am a BIG Lord of the Rings fan. [R.T. Kaelin] carefully planned out the topography, the language, the poetry, the events and the battles just like Tolkien did and I think that is partly why I loved the book so much – the nice thing about R.T. Kaelin's writing though is that I didn't have to concentrate as much to keep the events straight.”

Rivals Terrene Chronicles Book 3 eBook RT Kaelin
Rivals is a fast paced, insightful short story detailing the rise to power of two clan chiefs of warring races. The story beautifully depicts the matriarchal society of the razorfiends and the battle-lusting society of the orcs. You will be caught off guard in a few instances, especially regarding the razorfiends. I was delighted by the ending, but won't say more in fear of spoiling it for you. This story is a great companion to the novel Progeny giving the reader new insights into the author's world. I highly recommend this even if you haven't read the novel.Product details

Rivals Terrene Chronicles Book 3 eBook RT Kaelin Reviews
I was excited to read the latest collection of short stories in the Terrene Chronicles. So far I have enjoyed this series greatly. The latest entry is the collection "Rivals" which includes three stories "Ascension", "Opportunity" and "Conflict".
In many ways this collection of stories was the most disconnected from the storyline. The first story starts with the razorfiends and while very interesting, doesn't seem to connect at all other than the fact that there are razorfiends in Progeny. "Opportunity" switches scenes completely to follow an orc, Rorrargh, who was in the book. This story doesn't seem to relate to the other at all. "Conflict" brings the two together with plots and intrigue to spare.
What I liked
Razorfiends are cool. They are well written and you can sense that they live from an alien viewpoint.
Excellent writing (as I've come to expect)
Well developed characters and plots.
Not so much
"Opportunity" was harder to read. I actually contacted the author and mentioned some editing issues and he went through and re-wrote many parts of the story. His comment was that it was hard to write from the point of view of a "dumb" character. I agreed that it was hard to read but his later efforts brought the over all quality of the story up greatly. An advantage of digital publishing.
This story presented interesting vantage points into some of the races of Terrene but I didn't feel it connected to the larger story of Progeny.
Overall, I really like this writing and I eagerly anticipate the next views we get into the world of Terrene, wherever they come from.
This bundle of stories was a glimpse at some of the races from Progeny that I didn't expect to ever see a story about. I particularly liked the stories about the Razorfiends, who I did not expect to like so much. These stories do a great job filling out the world of Terrene and are a must read for fans of Progeny, like myself, who can't wait for the next novel.
I picked this up because I loved Progeny so much. But I have a friend at work who is not much of a reader. She said novels are too long and she never ends up finishing them. After weeks of talking about Progeny, I finally got her to agree to read one of these companion books. I gave her Rivals because its a look into a race of razor fiends with an unusual culture. I liked it because in the book Progeny, they are killing machines. And in this short story collection you get to know the family workings of the killing machines. I found it to be my favorite of out of all of the short story collection. She finished Rivals. Then finished Progeny and is making her way through Merchant. This from a girl who had to be coerced into reading the first one. If you are reading this review, trying to decide if the book is worth your time.... you are wasting your time reading this review. Read the book. You will love it!
